Tomlike offers up incredible Cascade and Gorge views while hiking among old growth forests. You can get an early start by camping at Wahtum Lake.

Beginning at the Wahtum Lake trailhead, follow the Wahtum Lake Express trail down to the shore and head east (right) around the lake. At the junction with the Pacific Crest Trail, follow the Herman Creek Trail to the east (right, again). You'll begin your ascent out of the Wahtum Lake bowl and towards the Wooly Horn Ridge.

Shortly after the final trail junction, there is a well-marked user trail that keeps on the ridge while the main trail drops quickly to Mud Lake. Stay on the ridge and follow the obvious trail straight ahead, through open meadows and exposed ridge lines. After gaining another 500 feet, the summit marks the end of the trail.

While on the summit, take in views of Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams, and Mt. St Helens to the north over the Columbia River Gorge, and Mt. Hood and Mt. Jefferson to the south. Return the way you came, or head over to Chinidere Mountain, right next door, for more peak-bagging.

While the hike is incredible anytime of year, it makes for an especially gorgeous snowshoe route. Camping on the exposed summit is recommended for clear nights.

We hiked in from Wahtum Lake Campground later in the day on a Saturday to Mud Lake - there's a nice campsite there, well sheltered, although not with easy lake access. There were several sites around Wahtum Lake as well. On Sunday morning after packing up we hiked up to the summit of Tomlike Mountain for some wonderful (and windy and exposed) views. The hike up was relatively easy, although there was one short section with a tiny bit of scrambling. Also, the trail to Tomlike Mountain is not signed/marked - it is at the turn/junction for the trail that goes down past Mud Lake. Finally, there were several sections that were mildly overgrown - no problem for navigating, although it did lend to lots of water moving from the plants to our pants.

One of my favorite forests I’ve gone through on a hike. On a sunny day it’s beautiful to be surrounded by the tall slender trees and then make it to the top to that VIEW!
