Panoramic views of the Cascades. Having a mountain all to yourself. Easy drive to the base and short hike to the top. Perfect for a beginning winter camping trip.

Cache Mountain offers amazing views of Mt Jefferson, 3 Fingered Jack, Mt Washington and the North and Middle Sisters. In the summer months, it is also known as one of the best single track mountain biking spots in Central Oregon. This is a great spot for a multi-day camping trip; set up camp and spend your days hiking, biking, or just relaxing and enjoying the surroundings.

In good weather, it's a short walk to the top (less than a mile) from where you parked your car at the end of the road. Even when the roads are bad enough to stop you from reaching the end, it is unlikely you'll need to hike more than a couple of miles. Park where you can and hike along the road until you reach the trail heading up the mountain. During the winter you'll probably want crampons or snowshoes depending on the recent weather.

One special thing about this place is how quickly the weather and sky can change; one minute the sky is a deep blue, the next you're covered in a thick blanket of fog, then back to blue skies before a dramatic, bright purple and red sunset. These changing and beautiful conditions are ideal for photographers, granting the ability to shoot a multitude of light settings in a short period of time.

Directions:
Take Highway 20 west out of Sisters. Drive about 20 minutes and turn left onto Geo McCallister Rd, which soon turns into old Santiam Wagon Trail's Toll Station road. Turn right onto NF-2067/Toll Station Rd and make a nearly immediate left at NF-800. Pass two turn offs on your right before making a sharp right turn onto an unnamed road. Ideally you would follow this all the way to the end of the road, but snowy conditions can make it it difficult to do so. Even with directions this place can be are hard to find so I would definitely consult a map and check in with the Sisters Ranger Station before heading out on your adventure.

Winter Camp on Cache Mountain Reviews

I’ve been camping at Cache Mt. in various spots for 40 years. We used to be able to drive many of the roads that are now looking more like trails. If you get up to the top you’ll see the old fire lookout foundation - views just as good as on black butte.
