Easy 1.5-mile hike to stunning 226-foot Proxy Falls in Oregon. Two waterfalls, dog-friendly trail, incredible photo opportunities with misty spray.
Proxy Falls veils over 226 feet across two streams, creating one of the most amazing waterfalls in Oregon. The size is unbelievable—especially when you're standing right underneath it, which I would recommend anyone to do (just be prepared for a misty shower).
This accessible waterfall hike delivers stunning natural beauty with minimal effort, making it perfect for families, photographers, and anyone seeking an easy introduction to Oregon's incredible cascade country.
Trail Stats:
Location: McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway (Highway 242), Oregon
From Eugene: Drive east on Highway 126, then turn onto Highway 242 (McKenzie Pass). The Proxy Falls trailhead is well-marked along the scenic byway.
From Central Oregon (Bend/Sisters): Take Highway 242 west over McKenzie Pass. If you're coming from the Central Oregon side, stop at Three Creeks Brewing in Sisters—great beer and food to fuel up before or celebrate after your hike!
Parking:
Seasonal Note: Highway 242 (McKenzie Pass) typically closes in winter due to snow. The road usually opens late June/early July and closes in October. Check road conditions before visiting.
The hike is easy! It's only about 2 miles round trip. I remember going here when I was a little kid and I could hike it easily even back then. The well-maintained trail loops through beautiful old-growth forest before reaching both waterfalls.
Trail Experience: The path winds through lush Oregon forest with towering trees and moss-covered rocks. The gentle grade makes this accessible for hikers of all ages and abilities. The forest canopy provides shade on warm days, and the sound of rushing water grows louder as you approach the falls.
Two Waterfalls to Visit: Once you reach the falls, keep in mind that there are two falls (Upper Proxy and Lower Proxy)—make sure to stop at both! Each offers unique perspectives and photo opportunities:
Lower Proxy Falls: The main attraction—226 feet of cascading water that plunges dramatically over a basalt cliff. You can get quite close to the base, where the mist creates a refreshing (and photogenic) experience.
Upper Proxy Falls: Equally beautiful with its own character and viewing angles. Don't skip this one on your way back!
If you want to photograph Proxy Falls, make sure your camera is ready for the spray and have something readily available to wipe off the lens between every shot. The misty conditions create challenges but also incredible atmospheric opportunities.
Best Photography Times: My favorite time of day to go is in the morning or afternoon because the sun rays shine through the tall trees and light up the misty water coming off of the falls—outstanding for photos!
Photography Tips:
Camera Settings:
Critical Safety Warning: You have to be careful when you're close to the falls, though, as the spray causes SLIPPERY rocks and logs. Be careful when you get close to the falls and when you're climbing over slippery rocks and logs.
What to Bring:

Dog-Friendly: Oh, and don't forget your pup as it is a dog-friendly hike! Keep dogs on leash and be extra cautious on slippery sections near the falls.
