The Oregon Dunes Loop trail is a scenic 4-mile hike located in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. This unique hike offers a mix of beach, sand dunes, and coastal forest landscapes, making it ideal for those seeking a diverse outdoor experience. The trail features sweeping views of wind-sculpted dunes and tranquil ponds, and while the route is relatively flat, hiking through deep sand can be a bit challenging. Wildlife sightings and bird-watching opportunities add to the adventure, and the remote, isolated beaches provide a peaceful escape from busier trails.
As you navigate the trail, you’ll encounter both packed and soft sand, which can make the last portion of the hike a bit strenuous but worth the effort. Visitors often rave about the solitude and the vast, open feel of the dunes. Families can also enjoy this trail, with sections that are accessible and relatively easy for children to explore. Be sure to bring enough water and sun protection, as the open dunes can get hot during summer.
The trail is suitable year-round, though the best times to visit are spring through fall. Winter and early spring offer the added beauty of seasonal ponds reflecting the surrounding dunes. Parking is available at the Oregon Dunes Day Use Area, and it’s recommended to practice Leave No Trace principles while hiking to preserve the pristine environment.
PARKING:
A Northwest Forest Pass or an America the Beautiful Pass may be required for parking. If you don’t have a pass, a day-use fee may apply at the parking area. Learn more at FS.USDA.Gov.
