Across the ridge from the famed Huayana Picchu is Machu Picchu mountain, the peak the city itself is built upon. A steep trail leads to it's summit that is well worth the grind.

Machu Picchu is one of the world's most well known sights, and this reputation is rightly earned. The famous image everyone is used to seeing has more then one angle though.

To the south of the city is a trailhead to the summit of the actual peak of Macchu Picchu Mountain. Once you get to Machu Picchu you can proceed up to the trail head gate to pay the entrance fee.

The hike is basically a long series of steadily steeping granite steps. You move from jungle shade, out onto narrow ledges, where people passes two by two gets pretty tight. The final ridge is really quite spectacular, ending in a broad open area with a small hutch for shelter. Beyond that a dias looks down onto the sprawling valley, and the spectacular city laid out in full beneath your feet.
