Description

Along the coast of scenic Beavertail State Park hides Fort Burnside, an abandoned Navy control post.

Built in 1942, Fort Burnside was a coastal fort for World War II. It was later abandoned in 1948, a few years after the war ended.

The fort itself is built into a hillside so its a little hard to notice, but it can be seen on the left hand side while driving in. Drive past the entrance roughly 100 feet for the parking lot. The fort is relatively small but still pretty fascinating. There is a main tunnel that stretches roughly 300 feet with little hallways and rooms extending off the sides. Be careful while exploring as I did see some mattresses laid out in some of the rooms.
