Description

With a breathtaking panoramic view of San Diego's north county, Battle Mountain does not disappoint.

This is a quick and easy hike for everyday explorers desiring a 20-minute sweat-inducing power walk leading to incredible views of urban development, Iron Mountain, Mt. Woodson, Mule Hill, and The 15. Come enjoy the views while sitting under the beautiful 20ft cross you've been admiring from the freeway!

When it comes to Rancho Bernardo, most people overlook this "mountain" because of its size compared to Mule Hill and other neighboring peaks. The trailhead begins between two residential houses but is fairly easy to find and tackle in less than an hour. This hike is more of a steep walk that can be completed in 20 minutes or less and is a great way to view the beautiful San Diego County in one afternoon. The first part of the hike is a slight incline through an overgrown trail leading to a steeper trail with some heavy erosion. Once you pass this, the incline increases and it is somewhat easy to ascend up the trail as the terrain is rocky and provides firm footholds. If you come in the evening or morning, you will avoid the direct and scorching afternoon sun that will take its toll considering there is no shade throughout the hike. In the summer or afternoon, it will look like the photos featured here...sunny, clear, and a sweat-breaking 85 degrees.

Battle Mountain's Cross Reviews

You wont have to worry about the shoulder checking weekend workout warriors or over crowded peaks. This is one of San Diego's least popular hikes, which lends to a more private-like hike. Like the description says, it can be tackled in less than an hour (round trip). Its short but steep, and the views are sweet! Enjoy, whist being respectful of the environment and local community.

It's deceptively steep but short and quick. Definitely worth the sweat for the views...bring plenty of water.
