Description

Added by Shalee Blackmer

This hike takes you along the shores of the Pacific Ocean to the uniquely amazing San Pedro Rock.

The hike begins near Pacifica's public beach and can only be accessed during a negative tide. Because most of the property is private other than the rocky shore, those who wish to access the rock must follow the shoreline roughly two miles to reach the point. During higher tides, the ocean crashes against the cliffs, leaving no room for hiking.

Once a negative tide window opens, begin your hike by heading southwest down the coast from Pacifica State Beach. Wear good shoes, as the entire trek includes hobbling over slippery boulders and loose rocks.

Once you make it around the first point, you will see San Pedro rock in the distance. Make your way around a second cove (but do not step on the property of those living there) and make your way to the point.

The entire hike is surrounded by an extremely fragile ecosystem. Please be aware of your surroundings and please do not damage or tamper with the surrounding sea life. On this hike you will encounter many crabs, starfish, and other sea animals. Please treat them with respect.

Because of it's inaccessible location, there will likely be no other people around. So take in the beauty and enjoy the view. However, make sure you track the tides to know when it will start rising again. Getting stuck near San Pedro Rock with rising tides can be risky.

You can get tide data on the US Harbors website.
