Take in some of the revealed east bay backcountry and prepare yourself for 1,400ft of climbing in the last two miles to Murietta Falls.
Get ready for one of the toughest, lung busting hikes in the east bay with over 6-miles and 4,000ft of climbing in one direction. When you make it to the hike, it's also important to realize that without recent rain, there many not actually be a waterfall. With that said, you're still getting in a great climb, and spending the day outdoors on one of the bay area's most challenging climbs.
If you're preparing for some time in the sierras or just looking to test your metal locally, this is the hike for you. After you park in the abundant parking area, head to the sign for the Ohlone Wildnerness, and get ready to start climbing at Stromer Spring. After crossing a river or two and grinding out the 1,400ft, head up Schlieper Rock, placing you just shy of Murietta Falls.
When you're ready to reward yourself for this big climb, head to First Street Ale House to grab a burger and a beer!
FEES:
- $10 per-vehicle entry fee to the park on weekends and holidays (see ebparks.org for udpated pricing)
- $2 per person for a wilderness permit (see EBParks.org/permits/ohlone-wilderness for udpated pricing)

Murietta Falls Reviews
Seasonal waterfall so go after recent rain and best to go in late march/ early april for wildflowers. Bring poles for the uphill climb and the downhill to save your knees. Don’t forget that you will have to pay the entrance fee to Del Valle Regional Park. And a permit is required to hike the Ohlone Wilderness trail. Permit is $2 and you can pay online a week in advance or go to the visitor center during normal hours the day of your hike.

Do not underestimate this hike on a hot day. There is little shade and plenty of elevation gain to get you panting. I went through about 3 liters of water on this hike so make sure to bring plenty. There are plenty of hare, chipmunks, deer and birds of prey to keep you interested, however I found the views on this hike are underwhelming compared to many. The waterfall dries up in the summer so I would avoid this hike if seeing the waterfall is the goal. Great workout but this hike was nothing incredibly special.

Bring enough drinking water for the full trip. And if you bring your dog, they'll be in gopher heaven!!!
