There's something special about a mountain town in the winter, especially one that is so surrounded by adventure as Golden, British Columbia.

Located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Golden is the perfect basecamp for a winter experience. Whether you're into skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, or simply relaxing in a beautiful place, Golden delivers.

Carve the Slopes

There are five ski resorts within easy driving distance on Golden, making it an ideal destination for those who are looking to explore the mountains on ski or board.

Golden's hometown resort, Kicking Horse, is just 15 minutes from downtown and has the fourth-highest vertical drop in North America. It's known for its endlessly long runs, so get ready for your legs to burn! Kicking Horse has over 120 runs, four bowls, and almost 3,500 acres of skiable terrain.

Other nearby resorts include Lake Louise, Panorama Mountain Village, Revelstoke, and Sunshine Village Resort.

Earn Your Turns

If getting into the backcountry is more your style, Golden will treat you right. In fact, there is so much backcountry terrain around Golden that no matter which direction you head, you'll find mountains and slopes to satisfy your powder dreams.

To get started, head to Rogers Pass in Glacier National Park. Rogers Pass is a mecca of backcountry skiing, with plentiful terrain and more than 30 feet of snowfall per year. Stop in the Rogers Pass Discovery Centre to grab your winter permit and check out the history — the Centre was named the best national park museum in Canada.

Or stick closer to town and discover the Dogtooth Range of the Purcell mountains. These peaks are visible from town and have a mixture of long, steep couloirs, and more mellow alpine rising. Head east and you are in the Canadian Rockies, need we say more?

Snowmobiling the Backcountry

Beginner and expert snowmobilers alike will find plentiful trails, backcountry routes, and powder stashes around Golden. The Golden area has over 240 kilometers of groomed trails, four maintained snowmobiling areas, and 13 distinct zones for winter fun on a snow machine. Snowmobile rentals and tours are available from Golden.

The Westbench Trail is a favorite for beginners and families due to its gentle terrain and low avalanche danger. The 38-kilometer route is the perfect way to spend a morning or afternoon. Families will also love the 14.4-kilometer groomed trail the Golden Snowmobile Club Cabin in Quartz Creek.

For more advanced riders, Silent Pass and Gorman Lake offer scenic, remote routes that'll keep your blood pumping.

Enjoy that Lodge Life

Golden is a haven in the mountains, and several frontcountry and backcountry lodges cater to those who want to relax in a winter wonderland. Lodges range from self-catering to full-service and offer amenities such as hot tubs, ski-in/ski-out convenience, luxurious rooms, and wellness options like massage, yoga, and sweat lodges.

In a Golden lodge, you can adventure by day and nestle into comfort at night. If #lodgelife isn't your style, Golden also has hotels, cabins, bed & breakfasts, hostels, and vacation rentals
