The Renegade Spirit of Danner

Join the pursuit of something different.

By: Sara Sheehy + Save to a List

If you've ever spent time with a logger, a wildland firefighter, or a trail builder, you've definitely heard about — or at least seen — a pair of Danner boots. Founded by Charles Danner in 1932, this Portland-based company has been creating some of the best boots in the business for almost 90 years.

What is less known about this pioneering heritage brand is their collection of boots for the more casual hiker. If you like to aim your dollars at companies that focus on excellent craftsmanship, product longevity, and, let's face it, just damn good looking boots, then Danner deserves to be on your radar.

Rooted in the Pacific Northwest

Charles Danner's move to the Pacific Northwest was fueled by the promise of the rugged unknown. It's not unlike why many people still uproot their lives and head to this land of waterfalls, deep gorges, dense forests, and sweeping coastlines.

In the 1930s, logging was king in Washington and Oregon. Charles Danner had a dream to build the best logger boots, and his shop did just that. Today, Danner crafts boots that are made for people drawn to adventure, exploration, and yes, hard work. It's all part of the PNW lifestyle that many have come to love.

Crafted for Longevity

The story goes that Charles Danner walked his shop before it opened every morning, touching the hides of leather, re-filling thread, and replacing needles on sewing machines. He was trying to build something that would last — a company,  of course, but also boots that would serve their owners for years to come.

Danner is committed to making high-quality boots, using the best materials they can find, to create a product that's built to last. Their primary factory is still in Portland, and many of their boots are made in the United States.

They also offer boot recrafting in their Portland shop, which can bring well-worn, stitched boots back to life. It's all part of the Danner heritage: creating products that help you get where you're going, for as long as you need them to.

The Boots

Danner's product lines include boots and shoes for working, hiking, hunting, military, and law enforcement. They also offer "lifestyle" footwear that toes the line between urban pursuits and low-key adventuring.

Want to go straight to the old-school style? Danner's Mountain Light boots were introduced in 1979 and feature a one-piece leather upper and Vibram outsoles. These boots, if taken care of properly, will last you a lifetime.

If you're looking for something a little more modern, and a little lighter, check out the Jag or the breathable Mountain 600 Enduroweave (both available in men and women's styles). Danner also offers low hikers, boots with Gore-Tex, casual boots, winter boots, and even wading boots (in partnership with Patagonia).

There's a little something for everyone but choose wisely. Chances are you'll love your boots so much you won't want to let them go.
