Peaceful campground with lots of open space nestled in the Black Hills.

Elk Mountain Campground is in a secluded area of the park, providing plenty of peace and quiet. Sites operate on a first come, first serve basis, although the campground was less than half full when we stayed in the middle of busy summer months.

There are about 64 sites available in the campground. Sites are available both in the open prairie or in the hills along the treeline. Each site is equipped with a level tent pad, campfire ring, and picnic table. Flush toilets and running water are available most of the year.

The campground fee is $18.00/night when water and toilet facilities are in service and $9.00/night in late fall through early spring when the water is turned off. Firewood is available at the campground entrance for a donation.

There are frequently deer, buffalo, and other wildlife around the campground, so keep your eyes peeled for a sighting!

Camp at Elk Mountain Campground in Wind Cave National Park Reviews

The campground itself is nice, there are lots of sites. Just camped there last night (Sept. 23rd) not many other people camping so it was nice and quiet. There was also a program put on by the NPS about Elk, and after the program we got to caravan out to a different park of the park, hiked a couple hundred yards off the road, and then heard the elk bugling! It was a pretty incredible experience!
