This summer my husband and I decided to explore the Europa Peaks National Park in Asturias, Spain. This park algon with Pyrenees National Park are two of the jewels housed in the spanish summits. Wild landscape, infinite routes activities and of course outdoor spirit everywhere.

Starting in Santiago de Compostela (the city where I was born and of course I encourage you to visit) we drove 300km (190 miles) to Sotres, a very little town in the middle of the European Peaks. The road untill this spot is very wild…you know what I mean! Be ready for the adrenaline!

We arrived at Cipriano´s house (a lovely little hotel where the people make you feel comfortable and you´r in your own home) by the afternoon. We prepared all the gear and food for the next day: the route to Bulnes town.

This route will take us on a short but intense walk from Poncebos  through the Channel Texu ( Canal del Tejo ) , an impressive gorge formed by an ancient glacier that left from the base of Urriellu Peak or  Naranjo de Bulnes until the  the current Poncebos , the starting point of our route. At the beginning of the route there is a sign that informs us of the possibility of falling rocks , something evident in the case of a gorge with high vertical walls but that is not worth remembering.

We were gaining altitude head up to the impressive limestone walls of the gorge mountains in the background, and let us just imagine the vastness of the Central Massif of the Europa Peaks with its peaks over 8200 feet.

The village of Bulnes  is 2200 feet  above sea level. In a strategic location in the Central Massif of the Europa Peaks , near the pastures of the northern slopes of the Massif Central.

We walked 7 miles, stopping to have a launch with the typical cheese from this area called Cabrales cheese, very strong and intense. If you like cheese like Roquefort, definitely you will love this!

If you are planning to come to Spain please don’t forget to visit Europa Peaks and make the Bulnes route. Rugged terrain , high altitude and mountaineer/outdoor spirit will accompany you on your adventure.

See you soon in Spain summits!
