Since the Trigg tower was used as a fire observation tower, you can see for miles and miles into the Shawnee national forest. On a clear night, the glow from cities can be seen in the distance but it won't stop you from enjoying some awesome stargazing!

This is the best spot in Southern Illinois to watch the sunset, hands down. The drive from the parking lot is still safe after dark, so no worries!

Excellent write-up about this great beginner hike! When we hiked to the bridge, the weather was over 100 F. I would recommend bringing 1 liter of water per person for this relatively short hike, as there is almost no shade on this trail (until you get to the bridge!). Don't forget to stop by the store in the National Park and get a homemade pie or a cinnamon roll, they're delicious!

We enjoyed the hike to Gem lake in mid May when some of the better known trails (I'm looking at you, Dream Lake) were still packed with heavy snow. Important to note that the Lumpy Ridge trailhead is not technically a NPS fee area. Even though we have a parks pass, there was no one there to look at it or to collect fees.
