Description

The Fork Knob and White Rock Loop in Johnson City, Tennessee, is a moderately challenging hiking trail that spans approximately 3.12 miles. The trail is marked by a variety of natural features, including a prominent rock formation known as White Rock, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. The trail begins at the base of Fork Knob, a notable hill that provides a steady incline for the first portion of the hike. As hikers ascend, they will pass through a mixed forest of oak and pine, with occasional clearings that offer glimpses of the nearby Watauga River. Upon reaching the top of Fork Knob, the trail descends into a valley before climbing again towards White Rock. This section of the trail is characterized by a series of switchbacks and rocky terrain, requiring careful footing. The trail is well-marked and maintained, but hikers should be prepared for a moderate level of physical exertion due to the changes in elevation. It is recommended to bring plenty of water, wear sturdy footwear, and allow approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete the loop. The trail is open year-round, but the best time to visit is in the fall when the foliage is at its peak.

Fork Knob, White Rock and The Noggin Loop Reviews

Buffalo Mountain has many trails and overlooks for day hikes. Most are simpler trails great for kids and families. There are certain sections that are steeper and may take a little more time to traverse. The views from the top overlooking Johnson City and Unicoi are like no other.
