Camp at Pyramid Lake in Murdock Basin of Utah's Uinta Mountains

Hanna, Utah

Description

Added by Chris Engelsman

An adventurous camping destination for hiking, fishing, and chilling! Setup base camp and enjoy the great outdoors. All at 9,700 feet.

Grab a fishing pole, hammock, or book. Pyramid Lake is the perfect setting to kick back and relax in Murdock Basin of Utah's Uinta Mountains!

Pyramid Lake is at an elevation of 9,700 feet with a 1,000-foot tall mountain directly to the west of the lake. Due to this steep face butting up to the edge of the lake, the sun drops behind the mountain early, but it stays light long into the evening.

There are a handful of camp sites at the end of the road, large enough for groups, but the money site is a short walk down from the road.

Camping is primitive; there is no running water, vault toilets, or trash, so you will need to pack everything out, and bring your luggable loo, or dig a pit. Dogs are allowed in the Uintas.

Pyramid Lake is within the Mirror Lake Recreation Corridor, so there are fees to enter, but there are no additional camping fees. Fees for Mirror Lake Recreation Corridor are as follows:

1-3 day pass = $6.00
7-day pass = $12.00
Annual = $45
If you have a National Parks pass its free!

Nearby, Echo Lake has golden trout and is a favorite fishing spot. From there you can hike up to Joan Lake. Another fun activity is to hike to Blizzard Lake from Pyramid Lake or visit Cataract Gorge.

To get to Pyramid Lake, you will want a capable 4WD vehicle. A Subaru with 18-inches of clearance can probably make it with a good driver. The 6-miles from the Mirror Lake Road turn-off is slow going, with lots of rocks. Because of the rocky road, many people opt to drive side-by-sides and ATVs to the lakes within Murdock Basin.

Enjoy and have fun!
