A challenging canyoneering descent requiring some basic down climbing techniques in one of the most beautiful canyons in the area.

For this descent you will need two 60 meter ropes, an Arches National Park canyoneering permit, be comfortable with 4th class slick rock, and have your usual canyoneering kit.  This canyon does require some basic chimneying and canyoneering climbing techniques as well. The trailhead can be reached with a high clearance car in most conditions as long as it has not rained recently.

From the parking area, follow the west side of the fence north for about a quarter mile to a wash on your left.  The wash can then be followed directly west and then northwest for three quarters of a mile until you reach the head of the canyon.  Follow the canyon as the width varies from wide to shoulder width until you reach a small arch that you will rappel through off of bolts and webbing.  This rappel is 50 feet or so.  Continue down canyon to another rap off of bolts that is about 75 feet.  This will deposit you above a log jam.  You can either continue the rap over these logs and risk your rope becoming stuck during the pull, or pull your rope prior to descending these logs.  Obviously this will require a short down climb and some chimney technique.  After this, the width continues to vary to keep the trek interesting.  You will eventually reach the longest rap requiring two ropes off of a two bolt anchor.

After this, it is a short walk down canyon until the canyon intersects with MMI where you can go up canyon about a quarter mile to the fourth class exit.  The fourth class can usually be found by following the cairns and path of least resistance to the top.  You can then follow the obvious trail back to your car taking care to stay on the trail and avoid the crypto.
