A great spot to be introduced to backpacking just off the Appalachian Trail!

Camping at Sky Meadows State Park is a great location to backpack with young kids or if you are new to backpacking. The campground has 18 primitive walk-in campsites located 1.03 miles from the overnight parking lot at the park entrance. Reservations can be made online.

After checking-in and parking in the overnight parking lot, head into the park to pick up the easy trail to the campground. The trail is to the left of the road (opposite the parking area). Follow the meandering trail along Crooked Run for about a half mile until you reach a 1-lane forest service road. Interesting tid-bit, this road was the original road used by farmers in the 1800s to transport products to market in town. Turn left onto the road and follow the signs to the campground.

Shortly after crossing Crooked Run, the road will turn to the right with an option to continue straight. Take a right and continue up the short hill for about 1/3 mile. The first pit toilet on the left marks the beginning of the campground. Continue following the road up the hill. You will begin to see campsite markers with a color and a number. At this point seek out a suitable campsite that matches the color of your reservation!

Each campsite is located down a short path from the main road and has 1-2 crushed gravel pads with a picnic table, fire pit and grill. There is a hand pump well in the campground but the water is not potable. You will need to boil the water or filter it before drinking and cooking. Firewood is stacked around the campground and for sale through the honor system.

Bears have recently become active in the berry bushes around the campground. Proper food storage is necessary to keep everyone safe and avoid conflicts. Bring a bear canister or rope to hang your food from a tree.

From your campsite, you have access to more than 20 miles of hiking trails, 9 miles of biking trails in the park and easy access to the Appalachian Trail.

Camp at Sky Meadows State Park Reviews

If you decide to hike around in Sky Meadows (not to be confused with Big Meadows in Shenandoah Natl Park), make sure you do a tick check! During spring I was just about covered in them (as was my dog). But that shouldn't scare you away from the hiking, which is some of the best in the Northern Virginia region.
