Virginia's Capital Trail is the perfect cycling/walking/running trail for the entire family and runs from Williamsburg, VA to Richmond, VA completely automobile free. With over 51 miles of pavement, it's the ideal bike route to access from pretty much anywhere along the way.

There are numerous access points to pick up the Capital Trail, however, we chose to ride the entire 51.2 mile route from Williamsburg to Richmond, VA.

Mile marker "0" begins the Jamestown Settlement in Williamsburg. There is a huge parking lot there with plenty of parking and is the perfect spot to get started. Of course, you can also have your family or friends drop you off at one location and pick you up at another, which is what we did.

The entire route is relatively flat, so the miles fly by quickly. And there's no shortage of scenery along the way. For example, you'll cross wooden bridges that meander through mysterious swampy forests and pass by beautiful pastures, rivers, farm land, wineries, restaurants and more. There's plenty of history along the way as well as "kodak" moments, so don't forget your camera or handy iPhone.

The trail has plenty of options to stop for a quick picnic or use the restroom when "nature calls." There's even bike repair stations if needed.

Rolling into Richmond and seeing the city skyline was incredible. We ended the trip with a cold beer at Stone Brewing, which is literally right off the beaten path near the end of the route.

Also, be sure to check out the Virginia Capital Trail site for more info and to plan our your ride! There's plenty of valuable information there...

Enjoy and cheers!

Bike the Virginia Capital Trail Reviews

This path is perfect for running, biking, or walking on. Ride the ~150 miles to Richmond if you’d like! There is a cute coffee shop/gift shop called Spoke and Art close to the Williamsburg entrance of the path that is definitely worth checking out.
