The Enchantments have many draws for outdoor lovers. I wasn't able to camp there last year, but I did day-hike to Colchuck Lake, which is awesome all by itself. The views along the way and at the top are well worth the elevation gain (most of which happens in the last 1.5 miles.) There are lots of reasons to love this area, wildlife, mountains, glaciers, evergreens, fresh air, photo opportunities, and the beautiful lake at the top. And even though I suggest an intermediate skill level, the truth is a beginner could day hike this if given plenty of time and a seasoned hiker to go with.

Starting at Stuart Lake Trailhead, this 8 mile hike (roundtrip) gains about 3400 feet. Much of the gain happens towards the end, so it's good to take it easy early on and conserve energy. You will gradually climb through forest next to Mountaineer Creek then you'll cross the creek about 1.5 miles in via a log bridge. Take a hard right here and follow the creek (now on your right) for a little way. Around 2.5 miles, the trail gets steeper, and at 2.5 miles you'll meet up with the Colchuck Lake Trail. The views really start to open up here. Once you reach the top, it can be tricky to find your way down to the lake, and you'll have a steep but short walk down with a bit of scrambling. Enjoy the view of the lake from up above before you descend!

Once in the valley of Dragon Tail mountain, you'll have a clear view of the glacial valley above and the next challenge (if you're willing) up to Aasgard Pass (seasoned hikers/climbers).

Overnight camping in this area requires a permit from June 15-October 15. See Enchantment Lakes permit information. Note there are NO fires in this area. Stoves are allowed.
