Description

Added by Felix Madrid

This 10.5-mile roundtrip hike to Goat Lake in the Goat Rocks Wilderness makes for a great overnight backpacking trip.

The trip to Goat Lake starts at the Walupt Lake campground parking lot. You will start on the Walupt Lake Trail (#101) and a short distance from the campground, take Trail #98 (Nannie Ridge) as it branches off and climbs steeply northeast onto an open, scenic ridge top.

Continue on to Sheep Lake, and shortly after you will reach the junction with the Pacific Crest Trail (#2000). Follow the PCT north and continue to climb in elevation. Look south on a clear day to see Mt. Adams standing tall in the distance.

Take Bypass Trail (#97) to the west a short distance to meet up with the Lilly Basin Trail (#86), which will take you the remaining distance to Goat Lake. You’ll enter the Goat Lake basin on the southeast side, and see the mineral green water which remains partially frozen even into late summer.

Hike to Goat Lake, Goat Rocks Wilderness Reviews

I was about to leave on the hike described, and when I was mapping it out it is 10 mi to the Goat Lake basin... Round trip to the lake and back from the hike described is ACTUALLY over 27 miles. And MUCH more elevation gain. I am disappointed with this false and misleading information Thankful to have checked.

A very fun adventure! I did this trip as an overnight backpacking trip, and I camped about 2 miles from Goat Lake. It was a great way to go. There are many streams nearby to filter water from.

This is a such a great place. The goat lake to snow grass flats is also a nice three day loop option.
