Description

Added by Sarah Giek

This easy hike in the Sunrise area of Mount Rainier National Park provides breathtaking 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains, including an expansive view of Mount Rainier and a chance to see Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, and Mount Adams in the distance.

While most hikers who park at the Sunrise Visitor Center head west to get closer to the peak of Mount Rainier, heading east will take you away from the crowds while still providing incredible views. Starting from the parking lot, head north up a set of stairs. When you reach the split in the trail, head west towards Sourdough Ridge. The rest of the trail will be easy to follow, as you continue to head west while making a slow but steady climb. Look for a spur trail to the left about 1.7 miles from where you began. There is a small sign signaling the way to Dege Peak. After taking time to enjoy the views, head back to the parking lot following the same path.

Alternatively, you can start from Sunrise Point (the parking lot at the hairpin turn on your approach to Sunrise Visitor Center). The hike from here is shorter, however, you will experience more elevation gain so be prepared.

You can pick up a trail map at the visitor center or download the map here: https://www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/upload/2016-Sunrise-Area-Trails_access.pdf

My wife and I got up early to hike this as the sun was rising and it was worth it. It was so beautiful the entire way up.
