Kayak Gig Harbor
Gig Harbor, Washington
Description
Added by Lisa Zook
A peaceful and beautiful 2 hour kayak trip that includes views of Mt Rainier, wildlife, and a lighthouse.
Just over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a small, quiet, and tranquil town of Gig Harbor. The best way to experience the town is from the water.
Tucked beneath Anthony's restaurant is Gig Harbor Rent-a-Boat, a small rental company that will outfit you for your afternoon on the water. Most days the company has rentals available, but it's worth calling in advance to reserve, especially on sunny days!
If you're lucky enough to own a kayak, you can complete this adventure by putting in at the Gig Harbor Public Boat Launch on Randall Drive.
After getting settled in your kayak, follow the shoreline east toward the mouth of the harbor. Stay close to the marinas along the shoreline for the opportunity to see harbor seals.
At the mouth of the harbor, pull your kayak up on the sand bar and enjoy a picnic lunch or snack next to the lighthouse. On a clear day you will have beautiful views of Puget Sound, Point Defiance Park, and Mt Rainier.
If you still have some time, it's worth paddling out in to the Sound a bit, just to take in the panoramic views. Don't forget to keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles flying overhead! Be aware that once you leave the mouth of the harbor, the current gets a bit stronger. It's manageable but slightly more difficult to paddle than within the harbor itself.
Once you've soaked up the scenery, turn back and return to the rental company. On the way back, follow the other shoreline for new scenery.
After the paddle, head over to the local's favorite pub, Tide's Tavern. If you get there early enough, you can snag a seat out on deck and enjoy a cold beer while admiring Mt. Rainier in the distance!

The boat traffic here is light and poses little obstacles for those just learning how to paddle. Take a snack and enjoy the lighthouse before returning home.
