Hike the Kaymoor Miners Trail

Kaymoor was on old West Virginia coal mining town that thrived in the early 1900's until it was abandoned in the 1950's. Along this trail you will see remnants of the old mine entrance, mining cars, a coal processing plant, and coke ovens, among other structures. 

This trail, although short, is quite difficult. Starting from the parking lot, walk back towards the road you came in on and the trailhead is on your left. You will quickly descend some switchbacks until you intersect the Kaymoor Trail, which is a gravel road. From here you can explore the old mine entrance just to your left. 

Next, return to the intersection of the Kaymoor and Kaymoor Miners Trails, and continue down to Kaymoor Bottom by taking the wooden steps that descend down to the river. There are a total of 821 steps here! 

At the bottom of the steps, many of the structures are fenced off due to instability, but there is a worn trail that branches off to the right from the bottom of the steps. Following this trail you can circle around the old coal processing structures, walk along some abandoned train tracks, and see some old coke ovens.  Be careful, as there are jagged metal scraps scattered around the site, so watch your step. 

Once finished exploring the ruins, continue back up the 821 steps (this will be difficult!), cross over the Kaymoor Trail, then switchback up the mountain and turn right at the trailhead to return to your car.
