Description

Added by Patrick Cole

Explore over 5 miles of hiking trails near the 24 acre, crystal-clear Lake Joanis. You'll find varied microclimates like wetlands, mature and young growth forests. This spot is ideal for day hikes and exploration without straying far from populated areas.

280-acre Schmeeckle Reserve is maintained by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point College of Natural Resources. Everything about it is in pristine condition. You will almost certainly encounter wildlife, and sometimes the wildlife is quite curious. I have had deer walk within five feet of me while I was laying in my hammock.

The Reserve is covered in trails, but the most scenic are the Lake Loop Trail and the Moses Creek Trail. Start at the lake trailhead and follow along the south side of the lake, then take the first right turn onto Moses Creek Trail. This will take you out along a wetlands area with a creek that appears red due to its sediment. Once to the end of Moses Creek, follow the Green Circle Trail back to the trailhead.

However, don't be afraid to leave the trails and jump into the forests. Schmeeckle Reserve is ideal for hammocking and hanging out, so don't rush your hike.

In the winter or early spring, hike out across the ice to Lake Joanis' island. Overnights are not allowed, so no need for a tent or supplies in that aspect.

Hike to Moses Creek in Schmeeckle Reserve Reviews

My Alma Mater, a top tier university for Natural Resources education, did right by protecting and preserving this “island of green”. The area has complex and interesting history, but above all this refuge for flora and fauna sparks appreciation in those who grace its diverse habitats. The conservancy area offers easy parking and is accessible to all ages. Definitely recommend adding a stroll to your plans when visiting Stevens Point.

I went to college in Stevens Point and Schmeeckle Reserve will forever hold my heart. The hike to Moses Creek through Schmeeckle is an easy, 2 mile hike through managed forest land. You will find yourself walking through the marsh on a well-kept boardwalk - keep an eye out for wildlife like such as deer, waterbirds, and a variety of songbirds. It is a peaceful place. Walk or bike this trail and feel free to bring your hammock when you're ready for a rest. Respect the reserve and you will undoubtedly have a great day :)
