Description

Unparalleled views of the Lower Yellowstone Falls and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

Artist Point, thought to be named by park photographer F. J. Haynes as early as 1883, provides what is perhaps the most beautiful views of the entire Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and of Lower Yellowstone Falls some 308 feet high. It is a breathtaking place to photograph year round and at all times of the day, though in winter it can be closed.

To get there head towards Canyon Village on the Grand Loop Road from the north or the south, or from the west on Norris Canyon Road (also part of the Grand Loop). The turnoff for Artist Point is well marked and is only 4 miles south of Canyon Village. From the parking lot is a short quarter-mile walk to the Artist Point Overlook.

Be sure to check the road and trail conditions before you visit

Artist Point Reviews

Definitely a stop you cannot miss while in YS. It is majestic up there! It definitely gets crowded so be patient to get that perfect photo.

I could have sat here ALL DAY

Although this hike says 1/4 of a mile, there is a longer trail to follow along the river. There is the very short hike to the standard more crowded, touristy overlook, but the additional dirt trail takes hikers to even more dramatic views with fewer people. I attached a photograph that shows the trail in addition to the overlook.

The view of the canyon and waterfall from this point looks like a painting. It's absolutely beautiful and worth the visit.
