A challenging valley hike within an hour of Indianapolis.
Located in Morgan-Monroe State Forest, the Low Gap Trail (white blazes) offers forest, creeks, ponds, and rock formations. The trail runs partially on old forest roads. A good spot for birding, with camping options as well.

Hike the Low Gap Trail Reviews
Nice prep hike with a lot of up and down. We took the loop counter clockwise. Lots of lovely native flora. Goes by rock shelter which was neat. 99%shaded. Streams were dry when we went. Be sure to pack water

If you're looking for an "intense" hike by Indiana's standards, this is a great starting point. With a combination of creek crossings, nature preserves, and multiple elevation changes, this trail offers something for everyone. The trail runs along a section of the Tecumseh Trail which is a 40 mile backpacking trail in southern Indiana. It offers multiple camping areas along its 10 mile span. While this trail is not a "looker" by any means, it does offer some areas which often remind me of other state parks in western Indiana such as Turkey run state park or Shades state park. All in all, if you're looking for a trail to test your grit or to train for a more long winded trip, this is a great hike to do so on.
