Camp at Sun Bay Beach

Vieques, Puerto Rico

Description

Added by Kelly Park

Sun Bay is the only designated campsite on Vieques Island. The waters are warm and crystal clear, and because the island has not yet caught on with the tourists, you can often have the campground and beach all to yourself. And be prepared to see beautiful wild horses everywhere!

Vieques Island is a pleasant one hour ferry ride from Fajardo, Puerto Rico (and budget friendly at only $4 round trip!) Upon arrival at the ferry port in Vieques, hop on one of the waiting cabs and ask for a ride to Sun Bay ($3 per person). You can also arrange for the same cab driver to pick you up at a set date/time ($5 per person for return trip).

At Sun Bay Beach, check in at the office ($10 per tent per night) and set up camp in the large fenced in camping area complete with BBQ grills and outdoor showers. The restrooms are clean and well maintained but bring your own toilet paper as it seems they only stock one stall at a time.

TIP: Set up your tent away from the almond trees if there were recent rains as the fire ants like to come out! Also be prepared to have wild horse visitors at night (store your food in a safe place).

Grab lunch or an early dinner at ArenaMar Cafe (open 11am-5pm) which is adjacent to the campsite and serves fresh food (tacos, seafood, burritos) and a mean pina colada!

The campsite is just steps from the beautiful, quiet Sun Bay beach. You can also walk about a quarter mile along the sand to get to Esperanza Beach -- great for snorkeling and across the street from a little town with hotels, cafes, and food stands.
