Iron Creek Trail is a great spot to catch the fall foliage in the creek bottom, or a
The trail is accessible from 2 different spots, both give you the opportunity for a scenic drive to get there. The approach from the Northeast side is on Iron Mountain road a beautiful scenic Black Hills highway, and you will be very near Lakota Lake. The Southwest trail head is a more rugged drive on a gravel two track called Camp Remington road that goes through the Peter Norbeck Wildlife Preserve and even on the edge of Black Elk Wilderness. The road follows Iron Creek until it dead ends at the trailhead.
The hike itself is relatively gradual either direction, none of the trail has any difficult sections. The toughest part of the hike is the creek crossings, there are usually bridges or thick planks crossing the creek, but this summer was a wet one and some of the planks did get washed away or moved, so at some of the crossings you might have to find your own way across. The nice part is the creek is not a large creek and usually has rocks you can use to hop across on.
If you are into fly fishing this a fun creek to catch some brook trout! The trout are not big by any means, but they bite hard and fight hard! Sometimes during the right season there might even be beavers that dam up the creek and build lodges along the banks.
Overall this trail a great one for anytime of the day and is always very peaceful!
