How would you like to go on a hike where the rocks sparkle like your eyes in the sun? I know just the place!
Granite Mountain offers outstanding views, an insane workout and a very unique terrain; thus making it the perfect trifecta for experienced day hikers. Located off exit 47 near Snoqualmie at the Pratt Lake Trailhead, this is a challenging yet rewarding adventure that is accessible year round. With a summer route and winter route, be sure to check reports before your journey to ensure a safe expedition with proper gear. Upon your arrival to the trailhead, your adventure begins at 1,829 feet. Not to worry, your 4.3 mile trek to the summit will have you sitting at 5,629 feet with a front row seat to the Mount Rainier show. The 1,000 ft./mi. elevation gain will certainly have your calves burning as you begin to ascend; however this intense climb should keep you warm as you venture through the chilly forest. Although the switchbacks are steep, enjoy the foliage along the trail know as bear grass and the sound of a small waterfall that you will later cross. As you come to a sign for the junction to Pratt Lake, stay to the right and continue your journey to the sparkling summit. At approximately a mile after this junction, you will come to the waterfall which is also an avalanche chute in the winter. Use caution if snow is present. As you head East, you will arrive at a meadow filled with wildflowers, huckleberry bushes and unobstructed views of the cascade mountain range. Don’t forget to look down at the glistening granite rocks below your hiking boots; after all they don’t call it Granite Mountain for nothing! The rocky summer trail will take your North through a few more valleys and you will get your first glimpse of the fire lookout at the summit. These valleys are also avalanche chutes so it is imperative that if trekking in the winter that you stay to the left and climb the snowpack boulders on the South ridge – known as the winter route. With only a mile to go, the steep rocky path often referred to as “nature’s stair master” will be the indication that you are almost there. On a clear day you will be able to see layers of mountains from the summit – the view is surreal so keep going! As you arrive at the lookout, your VIP seat awaits. If you are lucky, you may cross paths with a ranger who will have access to the lookout, otherwise, this lookout remains locked. Not to worry, the views will capture your complete attention so sit back, relax and enjoy! You earned it! Please remember to pack out what you packed in and keep our mountains clean.
