About this place

Added by Eric Harris

Foss á Siðu (Foss a Sidu) is a picturesque waterfall just off Route 1 on Iceland's south coast. The waterfall is 30m tall and surrounded by basalt cliffs and farmland.

Foss a Sidu is less famous than many of the waterfalls on the south coast, but its easy access and unique surroundings make it well worth the stop.

The river Fossa falls over a 30m cliff with jagged landscape on either side.  Two farms sit below the waterfall on opposite sides of the river.  Different seasons have very different moods here.  In the spring and summer the surrounding area is bright green and covered in wildflowers.

Foss a Sidu is located about 11km east of Kirkjubaejarklaustur on Route 1 (The Ring Road).  Because it's farther from Reykjavik than some of the more famous waterfalls it gets a lot less traffic.  It is clearly visible from the road and there is a small parking area directly below the waterfall.

Note:  The waterfall is located on private land.  There is a gate in the parking area that requests people don't cross onto the owner's land.

Right off the road and so breathtaking!
I can't believe this waterfall isn't more popular! We stumbled across it on our way to another destination and it took our breath away. ...
