About this place

Added by Margo Schmiederer

A beautiful and challenging adventure along the Delaware River.

Take a multi-day kayak or canoe trip in the Delaware Water Gap! Starting at the launch area at Milford Beach, you can kayak downstream in remote waters for 12-13 miles before you reach campsites for your first night of camping on the water. The next day, you can kayak about 6-7 more miles before reaching Walpack Bend where there are ample amounts of spacious campsites along the New Jersey side of the river. This area is more heavily trafficked by campers, kayakers, rafters, and motorboats.

On the final day, kayak 8 more miles to the Smithsfield launch area. This is one of the most beautiful stretches of the trip with many beaches, mountainous views, and a wide river. This stretch also has some of the more challenging rapids on the river, ranging from Class 1 to Class 1+.

Under typical circumstances, there are companies that offer 'running' services who can drive your car from the launch site to the landing site so that your car will be at Smithsfield when you land. This has been suspended for the 2020 summer season due to COVID-19.

Most of the campsites are free or up to $10 per night with a bring in, take out policy.

Recommended that you bring:

  • A hatchet for cutting logs for firewood
  • A clothes line for wet gear
  • Lots of snacks
  • Waterproof camera for pictures!

Finally, always wear a lifejacket!
