Description

Added by Sara Aho

Stairs climbing up the side of the mountain with views of Chiang Mai from the Wat Phra That Doi Kham Temple at the top.

Starting at the market parking lot across from Cup Fine Day (Mae Hia, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50200, Thailand), follow the marked trail through the woods. The trail is a well cleared and maintained, and primarily stairs carved out of the hill. It's steep and the stairs can be uneven with roots at times, so keep your eyes on the road. The forest is quiet and you'll rarely pass other adventurers with the exception of another expat or two running the same course. You'll also find the shade gives a nice break from the extreme Thai temperatures and harsh sun. You'll see spirit houses and offerings along the trail, reminding you of the reward of the views from the temple at the top.

Once you make your way through the wooded trail, you'll reach a covered patio/pavilion at the the bottom of the stairs leading to the temple. The stairs are the last obstacle between you and the views at the top (which are well worth the climb!).

It's hard to find good locations to workout in Chiang Mai, but the temple stairs offer a great cardio exercise to keep those quads and glutes in shape. The monks don't mind the athletes running and the views every lap to the top keep you motivated.

The pavilion at the bottom of the stairs is also a great place to do some squats and pushups. Spend a while there and it'll be a great workout.

Sidenote: The temple can be reached by way of the road, but the views are more rewarding if you climb there! Bathrooms and water can be found at the temple.

Hike to Doi Kham Reviews

Found this temple on accident when we were looking for a different temple. I second what Sara said about a good workout! Just make sure you wearing semi-modest clothes cause it is still a temple area.
