Spend an afternoon walking along the picturesque coastline of the Carrick-a-rede area and test your fear of heights by crossing the 98' high rope bridge connecting Carrick-a-rede to the mainland of Northern Ireland.

Located just over an hour north of Belfast lies the tiny island of Carrick-a-rede and the famous rope bridge that connects it to mainland Northern Ireland. The rope bridge was initially built as a way for fisherman to access their fishing nets back in 1755. In 2008 it opened to the public and is now used by tourists to conquer a fear of heights and get the perfect vantage point of Northern Ireland's picturesque coastline. Crossing the bridge requires a fee, a short hike along a coastal trail, and waiting in line to actually cross the bridge. Once across you will be able to view the coastline from a unique perspective and search for wildlife as it is common to spot seabirds and even dolphins from the island.

The main attraction at this location is the rope bridge and it is usually bustling with tourists, but there is so much more to explore in the area. I recommend heading left from the parking area and walking along the trail overlooking the coast. Few visitors head this direction so you will be able to escape the commotion by the bridge yet enjoy similar views.

Carrick-a-rede is located only 15 minutes from Giant's Causeway, so if you have time I also recommend combining the two for a day's worth of adventures along Northern Ireland's coast!

Note: The rope bridge is open weather-permitting. Check here for up-to-date hours.

This was a pretty cool adventure but the photos you can get here make it seem even more awesome.

The rope bridge itself is nothing too exciting, but the Carrick-a-rede area is beautiful and definitely worth a stop to explore. Water is bright blue and very picturesque.

We went to Carrick-a-rede a few weeks ago, and it was incredible. It was pouring rain, but it didn't even matter. So worth it if you're in the area.
