Take in gorgeous 360-degree views of West Virginia and Virginia from a preserved lookout tower that sits on the peak of Shenandoah Mountain

Shenandoah Mountain Trail North is located in the North RiverRanger District of the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest. Thetrail can be accessed from SR 33 coming from VA or WV. Look for a parking lotat the top of Shenandoah Mountain and the trail head will be located in the farleft corner of the parking lot.

The trail winds along the ridgeline on the VA/WV borderline andis the fastest way to reach High Knob Lookout Tower. This ridgeline routeresults in steep elevation gain in some parts of the trail. Most of the trailconsists of loose rocks and dirt. Before reaching High Knob Lookout Tower, there will be a split in the trail. The right will lead you to a meadow that ismarked for private property. Continue following the trail by keeping left. Thetrail to the fire tower will not take you through the private property.

Be cautious during the summer months for rattlesnakes whichenjoy the warmth from the rocks near the last section of the trail beforereaching the lookout tower. The summit reveals a large grassy opening and thelookout tower. There is a way to access the fire tower from the outside througha series of steps on the opposite side of the building from the trail head. Atthe top there are benches to sit on to eat lunch and take in the views. Theinside of the fire tower is locked.

This trail is a multiple use trail and calls for horses to havethe right-of-way. Bicyclists should yield to horses and hikers.
