Description

Get a bird's eye view of Kirkjufellsfoss, Grundarfjörður, and the northern side of Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

You can park at the Kirkjufellsfoss parking lot and head north across the road. Just a bit northwest there's a farm and some guest houses - head towards that. The trail up Kirkjufell starts ascending before you enter the fences of the guest houses. If you end up going too far, the nice woman who lives on the farm will yell at you, but also guide you to the correct spot. She yells because she cares.

I'm sure you've noticed it by now, but it's basically just a straight shot up the mountain at this point. GPS tracks are decently helpful where the trail gets a bit faint, but there's usually a pretty good trail navigating through the countless cliff bands - just remember, if you lose the trail, nothing's too sketchy until you get to the ropes.

Oh, right. The ropes. There are a few (three to be exact) fixed ropes on Kirkjufell to help you ascend and descend the scrambley/vertical parts. Don't worry, they're only a little bit frayed! The last rope puts you right on the summit, so take a ton of pictures, enjoy the scenery, and say a quick prayer before you head down! It's only a 2-3 hour hike round trip, but your heart will sure get a workout!

Scramble Kirkjufell Mountain Reviews

This is the best hike I have ever done. It was June so it was light for 24 hours and we summited at 1130 at night. There are some skinny ridges and ropes you can use to climb which makes the experience much more fun. There are also seagull nests up and down the entire ridge which can be entertaining to watch.

It' s a great hike up, before you reach the first rope the path can be a lil difficult to find.

Just got back from my Iceland honeymoon and I really can't stress how amazing mount Kirkjufell is. Simply beautiful.
